Description
Southgate Envelope No. 2, ´Ladies School´, a most unusual and extremely rare overseas usage, addressed to “Miss McCormick, Toulouse, France” (each line of the address apparently in a different ink), obverse showing fine black Le Havre cds of 15 August 1840 and ink manuscript rate marks, the reverse showing Paris and Toulouse(?) cds of 16 and 19 August; minor faults but in no way detracting from this attractive example. The point of dispatch is unclear but, given that the address includes the word “France” together with the Le Havre marking, could possibly emanate from the Channel Islands; ex Grunin (2004). Auction
