1840 “Rainbow” Colour Trials: 1d part sheet of 10 impressions from the fugitive ink trials (Sept 1840) sent by Joshua Bacon to Rowland Hill, printed in red brown on white wove paper, endorsed “No 9 Plain paper”, impressions 3,4,7,8,11 and 12 cancelled “712” and endorsed “Tartaric acid” “Prussic Acid” “Creosote” and “Turps” in the hand of Joshua Bacon, “A1” at upper left indicating his perceived “order of goodness”; a major line engraved rarity of which 9 sheets were used and only 5 survive in private hands.
