1840 “Rainbow” Colour Trials: The first trial plate of three (May 1840) in blue-black on smaller crown watermark paper with some manuscript notation down the right side, “dipt H & H Colour” in the hand of Joshua Bacon; small surface defect at lower right of the right hand impression, otherwise fine. The small trial sheets are the earliest and by far the rarest and most desirable of the “Rainbow” trials (S.G. Spec. DP19 (a), £110’000).
