Description
1936 3 airmail crash covers, “Scipio” crash 22 August, one letter from North British & Mercantile Insurance Co. franked with KGV 4a (SG 175) and 2a 6p (SG 238) tied by Calcutta machine cancellation, sent to London, with purple cachet “Damaged by SEA WATER”. The “Scipio” of Imperial Airways flew from Alexandria to Crete but sank with two losses of life in a water landing. Also two airmail covers with stamps soaked off, with cachet applied to back “DAMAGED BY SEA WATER” and “DAMAGED BY IMMERSION IN SEA WATER I.S.”, partial pms indicate that these covers are from the “Scipio” that sank in Crete; Auction
