Description

ONE OF THE HIGHEST “MAXIMILIAN” FRANKINGS ON COVER

Mexico 50c green lithographed strip of three, good to large margins, and 25c orange, fine to good margins (both consignment #95-1866) on cover to Guanajuato dated October 14, 1866, tied by “FRANCO / MEXICO” cds, vertical filing fold affecting 25c and reinforced behind, paying the very large $1.75 pesos rate, which is among the largest non-registered rates in the issue (in this issue any rate beyond 50c is rare and commands a large premium). A true rarity and a very handsome two-colour franking, especially with such a fine multiple of the 50c, and probably the highest franking recorded on an unregistered cover.

Note: The last high rate Maximilian cover sold in auction in 2022 (from the same archive) for $23,000 plus commission.

Provenance: Laegerlof and Wise.

Catalogue ref: Scott 29, 30
