Lot 10418 – 1800, Feb. 19. Entire letter from Veracruz to Valencia (Spain), endors
1800 (Feb 19). Entire letter from Veracruz to Valencia (Spain), sealed “Aviso” to indicate the carriage by a chartered vessel, handstruck in Spain with “4Rs” & “España” postmarks in red of Cádiz, the latter being erroneously applied in lieu of the “Yndias” hs which had to be used on mail originating from America, and black crowned “VA” within circle indicating struck on arrival. This letter may have completed the route Veracruz-Havana-Cádiz-Valencia. Very exceptional, one of just certainly not more than five letters recorded exhibiting the “España” postmark on mail addressed to Spain; the “Aviso” endorsement confers an added degree of rarity.
Provenance: Kouri and Sitjà.
