1840 “Rainbow” Colour Trials: 1d, state 2, in deep lilac brown cancellation trials in lower marginal strip of four with “A x 860” cancellations on each stamp, two lines pen lines of chemicals to test how fugitive the ink is which has caused some corrosion to the paper, manuscript notations at foot in the hand of Joshua Bacon, an important item; illustrated in “Rainbow Trials” by Rowse, p.55; ex Perkins Bacon archives, Major Allen.
