Description

United States – Confederate States 1862 3c, four clichés on celluloid in vermilion or red and purple, all showing notes by Sperati, with the fourth, in bright vermilion, featuring comments suggesting to be this his final version “10/51 sans taches” (Oct. 1951 without stains), below “Brun verde” (brown-green (?) ) and “cl. 9/51 corrigé taches” (cliché with corrected stains in Sept. 1951), with the other three clichés having a less good impression and dated in February 1951, of which one with interesting “pas cuit” note (“not cooked”); the vermilion colour used by Sperati typically increases in density and thus being able to provide a sufficient contrast.

Additional scans and images are being uploaded on a continuous basis, and the complete set of illustrations for all lots will be available by 1 June 2026.
