1859 Post Paid 1d .red-brown on bluish, vertical strip of four, positions 3/6/9/12, mostly large margins, cut into or touched in places at right, applied on obverse and reverse of 8.8.1859 envelope to Louisiana, tied by barred oval hs with the position 3 remaining tied in transit with ‘NEW 15 YORK/SEP 30’ ds, denoting 15c due (10c for the ship mail fee and 5c for the postage from New York to Louisiana), endorsed ‘Via Marseilles and England’ and additionally struck with red framed ‘Br. Service’ confirming carriage by English vessel to USA, dispatch, French transit and arrival cds’s on back, strip torn on opening and affecting three stamps, a unique ‘Post Paid‘ Issue usage on mail to United States
