Description

1857-59 Post Paid 1d red-brown on bluish, largely margined vertical strip of four, positions 2/5/8/11, tied by oval bars cancels to envelope (cleaned to remove some stains) from Port Louis to Reunion, with no dispatch ds, struck on arrival on reverse with Reunion cds on 7.12.1859 and light strike of framed ‘M & I’ hs with squared corners, being used on mail received in Reunion from Mauritius, or India and France via Mauritius, also denoting payment of the ‘décime de mer’ or 1d to the ship’s captain for each letter he handed over, this being the only example of this usage recorded to date on ‘Post Paid‘ Issue covers, in addition exhibiting a very rare and desirable multiple on cover and a scarce destination, ex Davy, Hiroyuki Kanai, Vikram Chand and “Tatiana”, signed Matl, cert. RPS (1967), Brandon (2007).
