1885 (2.2) Stampless Officer’s cover from Korti to Kirton Lindsay, England, marked ‘Nile Expedition. No stamps available’, with the large star and crescent date stamp of Korti, boxed “T” and handstruck “2 1/2”, with arrival backstamp at Kirton Lindsay Feb 24, 85, somewhat tatty, a rare usage.Note: GORDON RELIEF EXPEDITION – NILE RIVER COLUMN – The British reached Korti, a town on the Nile River, around December 15, 1884, and departed for summer quarters towards the end of March 1885. The date range of the fifteen recorded examples is 26 January 1885 to 23 March 1885. The cover is dated two days before the news of the death of Major-General Charles Gordon and the fall of Khartoum on January 26th reached General Wolesley at Korti. The cover is from Lieutenant John Pelham Dalison to his mother. He was commissioned a Lieutenant on December 19, 1883 in The Queen’s Own (Royal West Kent Regiment). He served with the 1st Battalion during the Nile Expedition of 1884-1885, receiving the Egyptian Medal with Clasp, and the Khedive’s Star.
