1849 (9.1) Stampless folded entire probably from Cairo, via Alexandria to Amsterdam, bearing the extremely rare “AGENZIE DEL LLOYD AUSTRIACO / ALESSANDRIA” oval cachet in blue applied on reverse with red arrival AMSTERDAM 7.3 red cancelation alongside, with French Post Office ALEXANDRIE / 21.FEVR.49 cds on front, the letter was disinfected and marked in black on back of cover with framed PURIFIE/FRIOUL, postage was levied on arrival in Amsterdam, an important exhibition showpiece
Rarity: Smith states “This is clearly the rarest of the Austrian postmarks (two recorded)”
