1900 Envelope from the US Consulate in Batum sent registered to a US diplomat in St. Petersburg, with six 7k paying quintuple rate, cancelled on ship by “BATUM / 1 / ODESSA” 16 IX 1900 cds with further strike below, white “STEAMSHIP ODESSA-BATUM” registration label adjacent altered by hand to read “BATUM-ODESSA”, reverse with arrival cds and attractive Batum Consulate wax seal, a rare use of the primitive registered labels which were used only for a short time at the turn of the 19th Century.
