1 tr. Scarlet-Red and 2 tr. Dull Yellow-Orange tied by SHIGATSE (Hel. T46) cancel on combination cover from Peking/China bearing China $800 on obverse, decorated envelope sent from a Tibetan in Peking to his hometown of Shigatse. Most probably sent by air, Chinese arrival pmk in Lhasa, the only Chinese post office in Tibet in 1954, handed over to the Tibetan post and directed to Shigatse, very rare, cert. Olsson.
China had built an airfield at Lhasa which opened in April 1954. In 1954, apart from Chinese mail to Tibet, the Tibetan Post did the exchange of foreign mail with the Indian Post Catalogue ref: 162+190
