1891 (Jul 6) Envelope at single letter rate to Germany with two 1889-1900 10pf tied by German Zanzibar cds, endorsed “Per SS Zanzibar”, reverse with arrival cds and commercial cachet, minor peripheral faults incl. restoration of top right corner, rare, cert. Steuer (2000)
Note: The addressee Clemens Denhardt was an early East Africa entrepreneur. In 1885, the Denhardt brothers signed an agreement with Zanzibar Sultan Ahmed bin Fumo Bakari for the purchase of 25 square kilometres near Lamu. In 1890 this agreement was revoked because of the Treaty of Heligoland ceded German interests in Kenya, Uganda and Zanzibar to England. Auction
