Description
1891 (Feb 4) Envelope from Dr Edward Schnitzer, later Emin Pasha, at single rate to Germany with 1889-1900 20pf tied by German Zanzibar cds, arrival bs, very fine, signed Mansfeld and Bothe Note: When Emin Pahsa arrived in Khartoum in 1875, Colonel Gordon, then governor of Equatoria, appointed him to the position of Chief Medical Officer of the province, and was appointed Gordon’s successor in 1878. In 1881 a revolt led to Equatoria being cut off from the outside world, which led to the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition, headed by Henry Morton Stanley, to rescue the force now withdrawn further south. Afterwards Emin entered the service of the German East Africa Company but was killed on an expedition by two Arab slave traders. He added greatly to the anthropological knowledge of central Africa and published valuable geographical papers.
