Description
Remarkable Showpiece of Polish Stamps Used from Constantinople
1919 Two 50f, one 1.50M and two 2.50M values all tied with three strikes of the Polish Post Constantinople single-ring cds dated 19 II 1920 (in error for “1921”), sent registered to Warsaw and showing circled “Wr.1” censor hs on front and 4 III 21 arrival on reverse. As the cover could only have been sent in 1921, the wrong date in the Polish Constantinople cds can be explained by the trouble in supplying a new date slug from Warsaw, owing to the depredations and chaos from the recent Russo-Polish War. Realised CHF 18’000+ in 1993
One of only two registered covers known with similar franking used to Warsaw. An important showpiece for Foreign Offices in the Levant and in excellent condition given its size. Auction
