1971 Harrison & Son colour trials collection of Machins including nine 8d colour trials, six 2s and three 1s6d (all different), with:

– 8d in ultramarine, the adopted colour for the 3p, mint h.r., pencil « K » on reverse, only four thought to exist

– 8d in dull greenish blue, adopted colour for the 4p, no pencil annotations on reverse, thought to be the only example known.

– 8d in plum, adopted colour for the 29p and 34p, pencil « 27 G » annotation on reverse, only two examples thought to exist.

– 8d in purple, pencil « G » annotation on reverse, only example thought to exist.

– 8d in deep bright magenta, similar to the adopted colour for the 3p, pencil « B » annotation on reverse, only four examples thought to exist.

– 8d in deep bright mauve, adopted colour for the 37p and 39p, pencil « E » annotation on reverse, only three examples thought to exist.

– 8d in maroon, pencil « 30 » annotation on reverse, the only example thought to exist.

– 8d in blue, unadopted colour on OCP/PVA paperpencil « K » and « 5 » on reverse, thought to be the only example known.

– 8d in greenish blue, unadopted colour, pencil « T » annotation on reverse, only two examples thought to exist.

– 1s in slate blue, unadopted colour, pencil « J » annotation on reverse, only four examples thought to exist.

– 1s in pale light emerald, adopted colour for the 12 1/2p, pencil « O » annotation on reverse, tear at top left, only three examples thought to exist.

– 1s in pale chestnut, adopted colour for the 7 1/2p, pencil « U » annotation on reverse, only two examples thought to exist.

– 1s in mauve, adopted for the 25p and 31p, pencil « 3 » annotation on reverse, the only example thought to exist.

– 1s in dull olive grey, unadopted colour, pencil « Y » annotation on reverse, only two examples thought to exist.

– 1s in pale olive green, unadopted colour, pencil « X » annotation on reverse, only two examples thought to exist.

– 1s in light violet blue, unadopted colour, pencil « I » annotation on reverse, only three fine examples thought to exist.

– 1s6d in deep ultramarine and pale bright blue, unadopted colour, pencil « 22 » annotation on reverse, the only example thought to exist.

– 1s6d in deep blue-green and rose-pink, unadopted colour, pencil « 22 » annotation on reverse, small faults, only four examples thought to exist of which two are damaged.

– 1s6d in deep carmine and pale magenta, unadopted colour, pencil « C » annotation on reverse, only four examples thought to exist.

Plus 1973 Machin undenominated proofs produced during commissioning of the Jumelle press incl. tête-bêche gutter block of eight with four in light violet (colour of 5p) and four in dark violet and three pairs in violet, turquoise and new blue, 1971 Post Office training stamps for 2p, 2 1/2p, 3p, 3 1/2p and 4p in mint n.h. blocks of four, 1968 De La Rue « Captain Cook » phosphor trials set of eight dummy stamps, mint n.h., and 1984ca. Harrison & Sons phosphor tagging trial on perforated dummy stamps of Thomas Richard Harrison in emerald-green on gummed paper, four examples each with different phosphor designs.

A fantastic lot of these important colour trials for one of the most iconic stamps of Great Britain.
