Description
1840 (Jun 16) Folded letter with a dual address from Liverpool through a forwarding agent in London to Le Havre in France, with the inland rate paid by an 1840 1d black pl.2 IB (fine to very good margins, top left corner with tiny tear in the margin only) tied by a red Maltese cross, backstamped with Liverpool and London cds. After reception in the London office it was forwarded by « Messrs. Redhead & Spears » to Southampton, delivered to a private ship, further to Le Havre, where it was rated with 3 decimes with French « OUTRE-MER/ 17/ JUIN/ 40 LE HAVRE » entry ds (see Van der Linden certificate for the details on this rate).

A very rare and early use of the penny black on a letter to the continent, in a special forwarding way.
