Description

1840 1d black pl.1b FI (showing double letter « F »), fine to large margins, on 1841 (Mar 12) wrapper sent from Scotland to Lubeck, Germany, with stamp tied by black Maltese Cross and London « tombstone » datestamp, backstamped Haddington (East Lothian) with Edinburgh and London transits, endorsed « private ship » with London « Paid Ship Letter » crown ds, ms « 1/4 » and « 4 » rates, reverse with Hamburg arrival, missing top backflap, a very rare usage of a Penny Black sent abroad.
