Lot 70308 – 1847-49 stampless envelope to London, signed Hardy
1832 stampless envelope countersigned on front by Sir Thomas Hardy (Nelson’s flag captain at Trafalgar and of « kiss me Hardy » fame, who had risen to First Sea Lord at this point) addressed to Captain Jose Joaquim Alves, a renowned Brazilian Naval Officer, bearing two-line black ‘Charing Cross/ 2py Paid’ overstriking red oval datestamp, reverse endorsed « Chief-Clerk of Admiralty » and, missing backflap of scant importance. A fine signature from an iconic figure in British maritime history.
