1851 6d Slate-Violet and 1852–57 3d Brown-Red on GB 1d Pink Envelope – Pre-Cartier 10d RateEnvelope from Goderich U.C., NOV 17 1854, bearing 6d slate-violet on laid paper and 3d brown-red on thin wove oily paper (possibly 4th order), on Great Britain 1851 1d pink stationery envelope. The envelope shows “8d Stg.” handstamp barred by concentric circles, circular datestamp via London 20/11, Cunard “Asia” from New York 29/11 via Liverpool 10/12 to Ampthill. The envelope was taxed 1d since the Penny Pink stationery was not accepted as postage.Note: Illustrated in Arfken and Gems of Canadian Philately.Cunard Rate – 8d Stg. / 10d Cy. Before the 10d Cartier Stamp – From March 1854, the rate for mail via Cunard in closed bags was 8d sterling or 10d Canadian currency. No stamps were available to pay this rate until January 1855, when the Cartier 10d was issued.Rarity: Only two covers franked with stamps from this pre-10d Cartier period are known.Provenance: Siverts, Wilkinson, and Hackmey
