Lot 1136 – Gupta Empire, Gadahara-Samudra, c. late 4th century, AV dinar, 7.62 g. Archer
Gupta Empire, Gadahara-Samudra, c. late 4th century, AV dinar, 7.62 g. (17 mm). Obverse: Crowned, diademed king standing facing with head turned to left, with halo, holding standard and sacrificing on altar to left, Brahmi legend gadhakara to left and samudra under arm. Reverse. Goddess of plenty, Ardoksho, enthroned facing, holding diadem and cornucopia, tamgha to left.
The Coinindia.com website refers to this as “a remarkable coin still holding on to its many secrets”. It clearly belongs to the Samudragupta series but varies considerably in design with a crown with lunar motif and a crescent-topped trident over altar. It is possible it was issued by Samudragupta in imitation of previous Gadahara coinage. A very rare coin. Read further on www.https://coinindia.com/galleries-gadahara.html.
