Description

Kushano Sasania, Hormizd I Kushanshah, c. 285-300 AD, AV dinar, 7.66 g. (29 mm), Bactrian mint, early series. Obverse: Hormizd I standing facing, head left, wearing lion-head crown surmounted by lotus blossom, beard dressed as curls with pendant bead ornament, wearing Sasanian-style tunic and trousers, long sword on belt, flames on shoulders, trident in left hand, sacrificing from smoldering altar with right hand; filleted trident to left, triple pellets under left arm, swastika between legs, pellet to right of altar, row of dots beneath feet. Legend in Kushano-Bactrian. Reverse: a god standing facing, head surrounded by halo, holding diadem and trident; behind, the bull Nandi standing left, inside dotted border. Stunning, with razor-sharp devices on the generous flan.

This type, which shows a different crown from the preceding Hormizd I coin, was probably struck at a different mint.

Good EF with lustrous surfaces.
