1838 (September 22nd) Soldiers letter from gunner Crampton, Horse Artillery in Mhow, Bengal to Newark Upon Trent, landed at Kilkeel, Co. Down and transited through Dublin. The cover shows a manuscript « Ship » erased over s straight line KILKEEL in black. Provenance: T.V.Roberts.

One of only three recorded Kilkeel ship letters.

Note: Rated « 1/5 » paying the 1s1d Kilkeel to New Upon Trent for 354 miles, plus 2d Dublin to Holyhead and another 2d Menai Bridge and Conway Bridge, this was erased and recharged « 3 » (2d India Sea and the 1d Soldiers concessionary rate. The cover was counter signed by the Lt. Col at the lower left.
