LETTER REGARDING « THE PLOT » TO PUT PRINCESS ELIZABETH ON THE THRONE
1556 letter from Sir Thomas Cheyne to the Mayor of Favesham regarding State affairs and talks of the secret instructions by « My Lord of the Councell » concerning espionage work to be undertaken against certain people suspected of being involved in a plot to place the « Prenysses » Elizabeth on the throne. Sir Thomas asks the Mayor to reply by « the same trustye messenger », and enjoins him to « ffayle you not hereof as you will answer for the contrary at your uttermost perill ».
