Canton 1838 (Aug. 24), entire letter to William Leslie in Old Rain, Aberdeenshire, Scotland with manuscript endorsement “Per Mary Anne Loebb from China 25 Aug 1838”; on reverse are red 2-line unframed LIVERPOOOL SHIP LETTER and datemark JAN 11 1839. 1/9 rate marking, two pages of correspondence that mention admiral Maitland onboard the Wellesley, the British Fleet and Captain Elliot, and the stoppage of trade in the period leading up to the outbreak of the Opium Wars.
