Description
Unpaid letter sent from Anvers (May 1/13, 1863) to Patras (May 11/23, 1863), via Paris (May 1 & 2/13 & 14, 1863), Bruxelles (May 1/13, 1863 – Belgium « cachet ambulant »: « Axe du midi ») & Athens (May 9/21, 1863). Taxed at the arrival at 144 lepta (handwritten in red pencil) corresponding to 124 lepta for the transportation through the French territory and with the French mail boats for an unpaid letter less than 7 ½ grams (“Voie de France”), plus the Greek domestic rate of 20 lepta for a letter up to 15 grams, according to the conventions of December 3rd, 1857 between France and Belgium and of 1838/1844 between Greece and France. The 2 lepta is from the Paris printing, the 40 lepta is from one of the first Athens printings and the 20 & 80 lepta are from one of the Consecutive Athens printings. The 20, 40 & 80 lepta are with large margins and the 2 lepta is touched at one corner. One 2 lepta is missing but very few letters from/to Belgium with LHH are known.
