Lot 60620 – 1829 (12.3) Folded letter sheet from Oldham to Lieut

1829 (21.5) Folded registered letter sheet from Cork via Cashel to Stirling, Scotland, showing on reverse MIDAY.MAIL/23MY/1829, with on front red convex CORK/124, black Dublin Add! 1/2 wheel tax, plus red circular Dublin REGISTER’D/15JU/1830. The letter was rated « 3/0 1/2 » and paid the following tariffs; Cork to Dublin 10d, Dublin to Donaghadee 9d, Donaghadee to Portpatrick packet 4d, Portpatrick to Stirling 1/1d and finally 1/2d Scottish wheel tax, a wonderful and unusual usage of the registered ds.

Note: A free registration but without compensation for money loss or Money Letter system operated in Ireland from 1824 whereby money was enclosed in the letter and a REGISTER’D in a dated circle was applied. The Act of June 3rd 1813 required Mail Coaches with more than two wheels in Scotland to pay road tolls. The rules stated prepayment of one halfpenny per letter irrespective of size and sent at least part of the journey in Scotland by mail coach. Dublin had a distinctive Add! 1/2 handstamp used for the payment of mail going to Scotland and distinguishable by the extended bar.
