Lot 85418 – 1912, letter sent during the First Balkan War
1912, letter sent during the First Balkan War from the island of Imvros (today Turkey) to Piraeus. With handwritten notice for 20 lepta postage signed by the Commander. These labels were produced in the absence of Greek stamps as proof of payment of postage until Greek stamps arrived. The label reads « 68/Kingdom of Greece, Imvros 13 Dec 1912, Receipt in triplicate, 20 lepta stamp, To Piraeus, The Commander, Signature ». This probably indicates the 68th letter processed. Possibly in lieu of Greek postmarks on Imvros, the cachet of the Holy Metropolitan Church of Imvros was used (with cross in centre). The arrival postmark of Piraeus 19.12. 1912 ties the notice to cover. A very rare mail with Greek emergency label from the beginning of the Balkan Wars, in superb condition without any faults.
