Description
A UNIQUE CANCELLATION AND AN EXTRAORDINARY « SEMI-XIPHOPAGUS » USAGE ON COVER1843, 60r black, late impression, position 18 from the First Composite Plate, a key positional piece from the lower left corner of the pane, large to enormous margins on two sides clearly displaying the corner plus an additional interpanneau rule at base, a magnificent « semi-xiphopagus » example used on reverse of 1st April 1844 entire letter from Jacarey via Pindaminhangaba to Rio de Janeiro, with the stamp cancelled in transit by framed « PINDAMI/NHAN/GABA » hs in brown (Ayres 1402). A manuscript note by Saoul Newbury above the stamp has been erased and central file fold clear of the franking. The only « Bull’s Eye » cover recorded from this locality, as well as an extremely rare letter exhibiting a « semi-xiphopagus » which additionally represents a key positional piece. Cert.
