Description

1858–59 1/2d Deep Rose, Perforated – Transient Newspaper Rate via Cunard

1/2d deep rose, perforated, tied by indistinct “2?” numeral on wrapper band carried by Cunard to England, bearing “1d” handstamp on arrival, small cove tears, fine.

The only recorded overseas usage of a newspaper wrapper.

Rate Explanation: From 1 August 1857, transient newspapers were charged ½d under Department Notice No. 44, but only when sent via the Canadian Line. A Department Circular (cited in Boggs) clarifies that newspapers sent via Cunard were instead charged 1d on arrival, as reflected on this wrapper.

Provenance: Challis, Wilkinson, Willson.
