Lot 11624 – Cape of Good Hope – 1855–63 6d Deep Rose Lilac on White

1855-63 6d Deep Rose Lilac on White Paper used on Bank Cheque. An unusual and scarce usage of the 6d Deep Rose Lilac on white paper, affixed to a bank cheque fragment, bearing a clear Graaff-Reinet Bank cancellation. Of particular interest is the manner of separation: the stamp has been torn by hand rather than cut with scissors, an uncommon feature for this issue, which was typically closely spaced and cut to shape. Such tearing is more usually associated with later rouletted version of the same issue, making this example especially noteworthy. Although the cheque is partly incomplete, the key elements remain intact and well defined. A scarce and attractive exhibition item illustrating fiscal or banking usage.
