1866 ½ Anna Black, Single Die, Watercolour on Native Paper – Earliest Recorded Use
A remarkable and historically important example of the ½ anna black, single die, printed in watercolour on native paper, recognized as the first stamp issued in Kashmir.
Approximately 100 examples are recorded, of which only about 10 are on cover, with three unused and a single known pair, underscoring the rarity of this issue. Notably, this die was not located for defacement in 1898, precluding any possibility of later reprints.
The present cover represents a major philatelic discovery. Previously, the earliest recorded usage was 3 October (Masson), later revised to 13 June (Staal). However, this example bears the date 23 Sawwal 1283 (Hijri calendar), corresponding to 11 March 1866, establishing it as the earliest known usage—and effectively a First Day Cover.
The stamp is tied by a clear red Srinagar seal cancellation on an internal letter, preserving both postal and historical integrity.
Accompanied by a Holcombe certificate, this is an exceptional rarity of the highest importance, representing a cornerstone item in the philately of Jammu & Kashmir. (SG £1600)
