Description

1840 « Rainbow » Colour Trials: The first trial plate of three (May 1840) in blue-black on smaller crown watermark paper with some manuscript notation down the right side, « dipt H & H Colour » in the hand of Joshua Bacon; small surface defect at lower right of the right hand impression, otherwise fine. The small trial sheets are the earliest and by far the rarest and most desirable of the « Rainbow » trials (S.G. Spec. DP19 (a), £110’000).

Provenance: Robson Lowe sale 1951; J. B. Seymour; Chartwell (2012).
