Lot 31047 – 1806 Second British Occupation incoming entire with crowned oval « POST OFFICE CAPE OF GOOD HOPE »
1806 Second British Occupation incoming entire, sent from Campsie, Scotland, to Major John Graham and carried privately to the Cape « pr Adeona » with ms « Ship’s Bag 2 S(helli)ngs » at top which was the incoming ship rate, with a fair strike of the crowned oval « POST OFFICE CAPE OF GOOD HOPE » hs, tear through address panel, interesting contents which mention Pitt’s and Nelson’s victory at Trafalgar, one of the earliest recorded usages of this handstamp.
Note: In January 1806, Graham was promoted to the rank of Major in the 93rd Regiment of Foot, in which capacity he took part in the Battle of Blaauwberg, under which the Dutch Cape Colony was annexed by the British Crown. He is best known for founding the settlement of Grahamstown in the Cape Colony in 1812
