The message reflects the opinion widely held in the West that the defeat of Japan was a foregone conclusion. Ironically, while this card was in transit the Russians suffered a crushing blow in the capitulation of the strategic naval stronghold of Port Arthur. This was a turning point in the war, which ended victoriously for Japan.
