Lot 50000 – The famous FERRARY-TAPLING Mauritius Post Office « 

The famous FERRARY-TAPLING Mauritius Post Office « swap » stamp, being the 1880 Peshawar Special Reprint of the 1877 1 Sanar Black on thick paper, made to be sold to British officers and soldiers taking part in the Second Afghan War. It was produced in a very limited quantity, of which only two or three are known today. Originally in the Tapling collection, it was « swapped » after considerable negotiation with Baron de la Renotière Ferrary. Ferrary gave Tapling the famous Mauritius « Post Office » 2d Blue (now in the British Library) and Tapling gave Ferrary this stamp of Afghanistan, which was considered at the time to have equal value!
