PAIR OF PENNY BLACK COVERS TO MADEIRA
Two 1841 entire letters from Winlaton to MADEIRA, both franked with a single 1840 1d black and charged 1 / 10 in cash, one with IL pl.1b with good to large margins tied by oily red MCs with Newcastle upon Tyne and London ds adjacent, the other from the same correspondence with LG pl.5 (faulty) faintly tied by red MC, with Newcastle cds and Lisbon and « 60 » hs in blue, minor soiling otherwise fine
Very rare examples of penny blacks going abroad, especially to the island of Madeira
