Description
THE GREAT FIRE OF LONDON, A HIGHLY IMPORTANT MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT
1666 Letter of receipt recognising the contribution of money made by John Moore Esq., Alderman of the ward of Farringdon Extra, to the Chamberlain of London to be used a relief for the « poore that suffered by the late dreadfull fire », with a list of the various parishes and the money allotted to each, signed Thomas Tunman and Aleyn Reade.
John Moore, later Sir John Moore, Mayor of London, was one of the leading figures in the rebuilding of London after the fire and indeed supplied the majority of the lead for the roof of St Paul’s when it was rebuilt.
Documents concerning the Great Fire of London are now of the greatest rarity. This document is a highly important example.
