They were all pink, the so-called lake or rose and they were issued on 1st January 1858.

The reason why they were all the same colour reflects the politics of the day and the fears of the issuing authority concerning “patriotic” gestures. Naples was the mainland territory of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, in which had been united the separate kingdoms of Naples and Sicily some 40 years earlier. In the late 1850s, however, plans or plots for even greater unity were afoot and, on every possible occasion, patriots were using the colour-code of red, white and green — the tricolour of the Cisalpine Republic which was to be adopted for a united Italy. The Bourbon King Ferdinand II who had ascended the dual throne in 1830, or his advisers, foresaw a possibility that stamps of different colours for different values could be combined in use on mail to create the red-white-green tricolour. And so the decision for a uniform rose colour.

The seven values range from 1/2 grano to 50 grana. The paper was watermarked with 40 repetitions of the Bourbon fleur-de-lis.

This issue continued in use under King Francis II, who ascended the throne on 22 May 1859, until 7 September 1800 when he fled, after the Italian hero Garibaldi had landed in Sicily with his red-shirt army. Following a plebiscite, Victor Emmanuel II of Sardinia was made king.

Trinacria and Savoy Cross

The Garibaldi regime lasted from 7 September to 7 November 1860. Garibaldi, a ‘beneficent’ dictator, was a fim believer in promoting the free circulation of ideas, which was one of the benefits of a freely circulating press. One of his first actions in Naples was to order that the newspaper postage rate be halved. A postal notice decreed that prepayment of postage on newspapers was compulsory and that the rate had been fixed (in Italian terms) at 1 centesimo which equalled (in Napolitan terms) almost half a tornese. The notice went on to state that stamps of that value were ready and could be obtained aut the head post office or from the more important tobacconists and the issue was to remain in use until Italian currency could be introduced in Naples and the arms on the stamps could be altered.

Since no stamp of the relevant value had existed, something had to be done quickly to carry Garibaldi’s order into effect, and since two tornese were equal to one grano, a simple expedient was to alter the letter of currency from “G” to “T”. That was done by using Plate II of the 1/2 grano stamps, and punching the letter “T” over the “G”. The alteration was effected by the printer and, because it was carried out by repeated handwork, each of the 100 stamps differed from the others.

This 1/2 tornese stamp is known as the “Trinacria”, a word derived from the ancient Greek name of Sicily.

A real difference between the 1/2 grano and the 1/2 tornese stamps is that the Trinacria was printed in a particular shade of blue, which some people refer to as Savoy blue.

The date of first issue of the Trinacria is accepted as being 6 November 1860, which is the earliest known date of use. The Trinacria was in use for a month. During that time the printing plate was worked over by an engraver. He erased, more or less completely the central design on each of the 100 subjects of the plate. Then, by use of a straight-edge and a graving tool called a burin, he replaced the arms with an uncoloured Cross of Savoy against a ground of coloured vertical lines. Traces of the previous central portion are visible on the uncoloured cross.

This stamp, of which the earliest known date of use is 6 December, is referred to as the Savoy Cross or Cross of Savoy, but in Italy it is sometimes called simply ‘Croce’. It is found in two distinct variations of blue: pale blue and deep blue. It remained current until February 1861 when the first stamps of the Royal Italian Post for Naples appeared.

The Savoy Cross represents the culmination of a very rare occurence in the world of stamp production: the use of a metal plate, twice altered by hand, to produce three entirely different issues of postage stamps.

Even in the early philatelic days the two blue stamps of Naples were much sought after by collectors. Both the Trinacria and the Savoy Cross were included in the first auction sale of stamps ever held in Great Britain. It took place on 18 March 1872 at Sotheby’s, having been arranged by John Walter Scott. The Trinacria realised £2 and the Savoy Cross 9s, as can be seen from The Philatelical Journal vol 1 p 62 col 2 April 1872. That compares with their worth in 1898, stated in The Stamp Collector by W.J. Hardy & E.D. Bacon London 1898 page 182, to have been: Trinacria fine unused £50, and used £15 or more; and Savoy Cross £5.

Both the blue stamps were used almost exclusively for prepaying postage on newspapers although there are exceptions; a remarkable cover is known addressed to an advocate in Naples bearing a block of eight cancelled Annullato and postmarked 19 FEB. 1861.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]

MASINI ESSAYS

The Neapolitan engraver Giuseppe Masini, after engraving the matrices for the first plate of the 1/2, 1, 5, 10, 20, and 50 grana, as well as the first two plates of the 2 grana, and having delivered an initial shipment of these stamps to the Postal Administration, was not awarded a renewal of the contract, which instead went to the more economical Gaetano di Masa and his son Gennaro.

To regain work, Masini decided to propose a new type of stamp, printed in a typograph, which would allow for significant savings in manufacturing costs. To this end, in June 1858 he created a single-design punch for all values.

This proof was initially minted in black without an indication of the denomination. Subsequently, 100 stereotypes of the various denominations were created on a single plate, which was printed in various colors by the G. Cattaneo printing house in Naples.

Masini was about to submit his work to the competent authorities when the discovery in a mailing box by the Postal Administration of a letter franked with a 5 grana proof (misappropriated by a printing worker) led to a criminal complaint that permanently cast the engraver in a bad light.

The color proofs were printed on both medium-weight and thin paper (white and machine-printed).
