Phileas Fogg might have circumnavigate the world in eighty days with the help of his trusty valet \u2018Jean Passepartout<\/em>\u2019 in Jules Verne\u2019s book, but David Feldman will wager you that we can go \u2018Around the World in Five <\/em>Days\u2019 with the aid of a technological \u2018passeport\u2019 <\/em>and a tiny bit of tinkering with our intrepid adventurer\u2019s itinerary. Because being candid Phileas went around the timelines a bit and didn\u2019t have the benefit of our Swiss ability of being \u2018partout\u2019 <\/em>– or if you prefer English; being \u2018everywhere\u2019<\/em>. \u00a0So this is your passport to everywhere.<\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”3_4,1_4″ _builder_version=”4.6.1″ _module_preset=”default” custom_padding=”1px||22px|||”][et_pb_column type=”3_4″ _builder_version=”4.6.1″ _module_preset=”default”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.6.1″ _module_preset=”default” Fogg and Passepartout did, we are setting off our five days of globe trotting at 2pm on Monday 30th November<\/a> in the imperial dynasty of Persia<\/a>, where the sun is rising on these 1868-1879 Nasr ed-Din Shah Lion Issues which are lot 10119<\/a> of the 610 lots<\/a> covering all aspects of postal history<\/a>, to Indian Postal<\/a> Agencies and of course the rich tapestry of the but not until day four of our adventure when we take in the delights of the Indian Princely States<\/a> in a sweltering 675 lot<\/a> auction, so hold that thought, because \u2018La vie est belle\u2019 and day two Tuesday 1st December we have fashioned a fantastique morning taking in France and Colonies<\/a>, with 669 lots<\/a> of histoire postale and French timbres, a particularly eye catching example available on the day is this beautiful 1849 cover <\/a>with an exquisite combination of a red grid on Ceres 20c black, and there are lots of French classics on and off cover, but no long lunches on this colony packed itinerary from Algeria <\/a>to Wallis and Futuna<\/a>, a total of 28 countries and 160 stop-offs<\/a>, before we give our undivided attention to France <\/a>turning the clock back to 1849 and the Ceres <\/a>issues and tip-toeing through the French reigns from the Empire<\/a> through to the Wars of 1870-71<\/a> and on to the 1900\u2019s <\/a>and taking flight with airmail<\/a> and a proper cargo of collections<\/a>.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.6.1″ _module_preset=”default” width=”73%” hover_enabled=”0″ travel take us appropriately across the west border into the clear air of Switzerland <\/a>where there are 265 lots<\/a> with numerous philatelic lakes, villages and the high peaks to challenge your restraint, which let\u2019s be honest wouldn\u2019t be very hospitable of us at David Feldman unless it at the very least featured a bit of Double Geneva <\/a>\u00a0and despite the rarity of this issue our itinerary does indeed take in these little green nuggets of twinning, the featured example a show stopping 1843 5 + 5 c<\/a> on a complete folded letter with that perennial red rosette of a cancel setting the heart racing.\u00a0<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”3_5″ _builder_version=”4.6.1″ _module_preset=”default”][et_pb_image Seated Helvetia<\/a> and then a blizzard of topics <\/a>from Postage Dues<\/a> to Postal Stationery<\/a>, before we gently get to the confluence of Swiss collections<\/a> to climb through.<\/span><\/p>\n Now, whilst we\u2019ve been enjoying this philatelic fondue, Phileas is still bobbing around the shark infested oceans, and although it takes him the best part of a month to rattle and steam his way from Calcutta to Victoria, and onto Hong Kong, which includes a stopover in Singapore, we are only at the start of day three and nearing the mid-point on our epic auction expedition, and having left the Alps we plough-down into Europe <\/a>in the morning and the first part of the afternoon of Wednesday 2nd December, we feature 565 continental lots<\/a> from Armenia <\/a>through to Yugoslavia<\/a> with a Parthenon full of Greece <\/a>material some of which we featured in our recent highlight of The Large Hermes Heads of Greece<\/a> article, but there are also some sights from the Ionian Island<\/a>s which allow for basking in Kefalonia and Ithaka<\/a>, then bathing in Korfu and Paxos<\/a>, and some Butes (excuse the pun) in Zakynthos<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n We\u2019ve also done a good Italian job, with Italy<\/a>, Italian States<\/a> and Italian Colonies<\/a> making up a spaghetti of over 200 lots with the featured item coming out of the rich territory of Sicily – Lot 40311<\/a> \u2013 in the Italian States section –\u00a0 a rare opportunity to bid on a 1859 1\/2gr Orange, plate I on porous paper, in this L-shaped strip of 6. If you need a shot to wash all that down, then we\u2019ve Russia <\/a>and the Soviet Union<\/a> distilled into an absolute ethanol of 53 lots from Imperial <\/a>through to Zemstvos<\/a>. Now, it\u2019s no coincidence that as we move into the afternoon of the third day and venture further Overseas and to Latin America<\/a>, Phileas at the corresponding time was on board the ocean going \u2018General Grant\u2019 having set off from Yokohama endeavouring to get to San Francisco, in the United States<\/a>, which we also feature along with Mexico<\/a>, however we continue the latin feel by traveling on an A to Z of this region, quite literally, with tours of Argentina<\/a>, Bolivia<\/a>, Brazil<\/a>, Chile<\/a>, Colombia<\/a>, Costa Rica<\/a>, Ecuador<\/a>, Guatemala<\/a>, Haiti, Honduras, Panama<\/a>, Paraguay, and Peru<\/a>, Salvador <\/a>to Uruguay <\/a>and Venezuela<\/a>. It\u2019s a lot of stops, and we\u2019ve not even mentioned Asia which in auction catalogue terms appears alphabetically, hence why we can defy physics and pick-up a take-away of tasty Chinese <\/a>lots which includes this 1912 Republic of China Provision<\/a> of Neutrality overprint on $5 myrtle & salmon, that is Lot 41019. There is a sushi sized portion of Japan <\/a>as well, and parts of Africa including 74 lots from Egypt<\/a>, and a run in Ethiopia<\/a>, and the middle east including Israel<\/a>, Palestine, Yemen and among others Iraq and Lebanon<\/a>. It\u2019s a collectors and dealers paradise and also a potentially valuable opportunity to purchase a Large Gold Medal winning exhibit because tucked in amongst the All World collections is Lot 60278<\/a> \u2013 a specialist maritime mail Mauritius 1788 to 1914 display, intact and still written up on the original pages.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n Then from the abundance of the collections to the rare and elusive we go, and it\u2019s your evening wear for the charity event of the week, when at CET 7pm we go glossy and glamorous in the Rarities of the World<\/a> auction in partnership with M\u00e9decins Sans Fronti\u00e8res (MSF), with 130 lots of mouth watering morsels, which as I\u2019m sure you are already aware the seller commission is being donated to the valuable work of MSF. If you were Phileas Fogg you\u2019d have your valet Jean Passepartout polish your tweezers and buff up your magnifying glass, because this is the part of the adventure to savour what is being served up. So, with Christmas so nearly upon us, how about the earliest recorded philatelic game from 1868, which is lot 70000<\/a>,\u00a0 or the largest multiple that can exist of the GB 3d on 3d and 6d on 6d in unique Post Office Sheets lots 70068 <\/a>and 70069<\/a>,\u00a0 or the finest unmounted mint Candian Chalon Head known as The Black Empress, which features in our rarity of the week article, lot 70011<\/a>. The estimate this time is \u00a3100-120k, and is the only known such franking of this kind.<\/span><\/p>\n Whilst the British Empire is comprehensively represented in this final day\u2019s adventure, it is worth a special mention for the following well stocked Islands; Ascension <\/a>which has 181 on show, St Helena<\/a> with 106, Australia <\/a>which has 104, Bermuda <\/a>with 64 and Gibraltar <\/a>with 50 stunners. However, \u2018Jean Passepartout\u2019<\/em> comes to the rescue because, as I said at the start, he is a passport to everywhere, and figures out that they have in fact made it in time, the confusion arising from their travel across timelines, and the gaining of a day, when heading west to east. And, we too must do the same and go back through yesterday’s auction, day four the afternoon slot, where we can pick up our very own \u2018passports\u2019, because would you believe it that Lot 60091<\/a> in the Collections<\/a> of the World is a mixed lot of seventy Passport pages. Incredible! Who needs a valet when you have everything you could possibly want for an \u2018Around the World in Five <\/em>Days\u2019 auction tour and be everywhere in a click of the button.\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
