Their « Liberated Zone » in 1945 contained 19 base areas, including one-quarter of the country’s territory and one-third of its population; this included many important towns and cities. Moreover, the Soviet Union turned over all of its captured Japanese weapons and a substantial amount of their own supplies to the Communists, who received North-Eastern China from the Soviets as well. The issues made for Manchuria had to use local resources to produce stamps in the smaller towns under their control, with issues printed for Ximan, Port Arthur and Darien, Liaoning and Harbin, and the North East China People’s Post. Stamps of Manchukuo were also handstamped or overprinted by the Communists and Nationalists, usually with characters for « Chinese Republic », or « Chinese Postal Service » and « Temporary Use ». Stanley Gibbons state that over 3’300 different handstamped Manchukuo stamps exist although they don’t list them. And care should be taken as there are many forgeries and bogus examples. Note: this paragraph has been edited according to the comment at the foot of this post.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type= »2_5″ _builder_version= »4.27.2″ _module_preset= »default » global_colors_info= »{} »][et_pb_image src= »https://www.davidfeldman.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Port-Arthur-and-Darien-1948-10-on-2f-yellow-green.jpg » title_text= »Port Arthur and Darien 1948 $10 on 2f yellow-green » url= »https://www.davidfeldman.com/dfsa-auctions/winter-2024-auction-series/europe-and-overseas/81644/north-east-china-1947-port-arthur-dairen-overprint-on-2f-yellow-green-000000001/ » url_new_window= »on » _builder_version= »4.27.2″ _module_preset= »default » custom_margin= »||0px||| » global_colors_info= »{} »][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version= »4.27.2″ _module_preset= »default » global_colors_info= »{} »]

Lot 81644, 1947 Port Arthur & Dairen, red overprint on 2f yellow-green

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version= »4.27.2″ _module_preset= »default » custom_padding= »2px||3px||| » global_colors_info= »{} »][et_pb_column type= »4_4″ _builder_version= »4.27.2″ _module_preset= »default » global_colors_info= »{} »][et_pb_text _builder_version= »4.27.2″ _module_preset= »default » global_colors_info= »{} »]

The Nationalists who had taken to conscription and hoarding supplies, also had strong support from the US, with soldier’s given to guard important areas, training, equipment and loans. As post-war negotiations between the Nationalist government and the CCP failed, the civil war between these two parties resumed in 1946. Between June 1946 and May 1949 China’s inflation spiralled into hyperinflation and the Nationalist governments inability to control its currency undermined support as it destroyed the savings of the middle class and drove the working class into severe poverty. On the whole I found it a very good overview. However I must point out that it is somewhat misleading in the area of the local provisional stamps issued in Manchuria immediately after the end of World War II, the infamous Manchurian Local Overprints or MLOs. Ricky states « Stamps of Manchukuo were also handstamped by the Communists, usually with characters for “Chinese Republic”, or “Chinese Postal Service” and “Temporary Use”. » 1) Both Communist and Republican controlled local post offices issued overprinted stamps of Manchukuo. 2) While many overprints were handstamps, some were machine printed. 3) Research is still ongoing, but it seems that many stamps sold as « MLOs » are either forgeries of the real issues or completely bogus overprints purporting to be MLOs. Unfortunately some stamp dealers in Manchuria contributed to the amount of forgeries and bogus issues, more or less contemporary with the genuine issues. New forgeries and bogus issues are still appearing now. Specialists in the area now mostly agree that unless contemporary postal use can be unambiguously demonstrated, particular issues of MLOs should be assumed to be forged or bogus. 4) Many, but by no means all, of the Communist issued MLOs contained the Chinese characters for « North East » in the overprint. Recently George Lutzitano has published a volume on MLOs and I believe that Roman Scheibert will soon publish his volume, which I believe to be more closely based on recent research by himself and Chinese specialists.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

Collecting Chinese stamps can be a daunting prospect, with a myriad of overprints for province issues and inflation surcharges from the 1920s to 40s, different printings, the dreaded reprints and as with every country, difficult forgeries, (even with relatively modern stamps).
