As the stardust settles on another fairytale auction of celebrated British Guiana<\/a> material, there is always a tendency to shine the spotlight solely upon the superstar material which perhaps breached the upper five figure and even the six figure price barrier. And for good reason, but stamp collecting isn\u2019t only about the highest prices, and often the real gems from a collection are the inconspicuous lots that have performed as well, but don\u2019t attract the same fascination as their iconic brothers and sisters, and they seldom get the limelight. So, in light of this fact, and given we\u2019ve already provided you with a detailed highlight<\/a> of results<\/a> featuring the aforementioned celebrity cast from the event, we take a closer look at a selection of the unsung stars from The Imperium Collection of British Guiana<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lot 30015<\/a> – 1860 Cover from Demerara to Sunderland<\/span><\/p>\n

The best place to begin our tale of these lesser known heroes is backstage in the British Post Office<\/a> section, which consisted of a thoughtful ten lots (Lot 30007 to 300016<\/a>) nine sold and although Lot 30007<\/a> was the standout it is Lot 30015<\/a> we draw your attention to, which is an appealing 1860 cover from Demerara to Sunderland, which is franked with a strip of six Great Britain 1d reds and a Queen Victoria 6d lilac, which made a startling \u00a33\u2019200 from a \u00a3700 starting bid. <\/span><\/p>\n

It is worth pointing out that in the much lauded Primitive section of this offering, there where, as you know, many superstars hanging out under the glare of the audience, and if we pay a little more heed, we\u2019ll be aware there was rather more that \u2018two ducks\u2019 of the 12 cents blue Cotton-reels, where you can find a whopping \u201822\u2019 of them available in various fashions – all that sold – and it is tricky to see any of them which didn\u2019t meet, or exceed its estimate. So whilst there is much to celebrate we ask that you take a peek at Lot 300048<\/a>, which is known as \u2018The Ferrary Numeral Error<\/a>\u2019 and sold for \u00a315\u2019000, representing three times its lower estimate.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lot 30055<\/a> – 1852 Waterlow 1 cent black on magenta, unused<\/p>\n

On a similar thread, within the 1852 Waterlow Issues of the 1 cent Magenta, the available ten lots sold, nine over and above expectations, with Lot 30055<\/a>, one of the finest of two unused singles known pushed above its \u00a36000 upper price to sell for \u00a310\u2019000.\u00a0 Another aspect of the collection which evades the detection of the glamour hunters, but deserves credit, is the quartet of quadruple frankings of the 1853 Waterlow Lithograph 1c vermilion on cover – Lots 30081<\/a>, 30082<\/a>, 30085<\/a> and 30086<\/a>, again all selling for more than their higher estimate, \u00ab\u00a0and if you have a glance then you’ll agree they added a note of composition to proceedings.<\/span><\/p>\n

Likewise, Lot 30090<\/a>, a gorgeous mint 1853 Waterlow lithographed 4 cents deep blue, attracted the attention of several admirers and started at a robust \u00a32\u2019500 with the hammer coming down eventually at a sturdy \u00a37\u2019000. And a mint pair of the same, Lot 30095<\/a>, reached a lofty \u00a310\u2019000 and a single on cover, Lot 30106<\/a>, contributed \u00a38\u2019000 to proceedings, even though bidding began at \u00a32\u2019000.\u00a0 Multiple stamps, and especially large multiples, can often find themselves in the shade of the sexier singles, but in the 1860-1876 Ships issue, Lot 30137<\/a>, a block of thirty five of the 8c carmines stepped confidently out of the shadows and sold for a stamping \u00a310\u2019000.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now without doubt the most underrated set of stamp stars is the rather mischievous looking 1862 Provisionals, all these naughty little lots accomplishing admirable results, but a few lights we can hang on our fabled stage are, Lot 30175<\/a>, a 1 cent black on rose with the roulette 6, which sold for a hardened \u00a34\u2019000 off a humble upper estimate of \u00a3800, and Lot 30193<\/a>, a 2c yellow with the same roulette perforations, settling for a juicy \u00a35\u2019500 off a start of \u00a31500. And last but by no means least is Lot 30203<\/a>, a blue 4c of 1862 issue selling for an ornamental \u00a33\u2019400, from a proliferated \u00a31\u2019000. <\/span><\/p>\n

And this is only part of the story to tell of these lesser known heroes from the cast of our recent British Guiana auction, because within their individual descriptions, if you care to scrutinize, you will find a set of star studded names, all who once held these gems in their collection. Names such as; Dale-Lichtenstein<\/a>, William Townsend<\/a>, Count Ferrary<\/a>, Arthur Hind<\/a>, Frederick T. Small<\/a> and of course John E. du Pont<\/a>, all who, once upon a time, spotted these little shining stars and gratefully left a trail of that stardust we mentioned at the start of this tale.<\/span><\/p>\n
