On October 14th, 2021 we had the great honour to auction the \u201cImperium\u201d Collection of British Guiana, which included all the treasures from the Grand Prix winning John E. du Pont Collection we sold in 2014. <\/span><\/p>\n This unique offering seized the imagination of an exclusive audience in our auction room, and the numerous telephone buyers who took part, as well as the multitude of online bidders, for what was a captivating 248 minutes of auction of intense bidding.<\/span><\/p>\n The results were outstanding!<\/strong><\/p>\n The highlights from the script of this latest British Guiana plot reads as follows; more than \u00a32.8 million<\/strong>\u00a0in sales<\/strong>, 223 lots sold<\/strong>, representing 94% of the catalogue <\/strong>successfully selling, and 130% above the estimates<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=\u00a0\u00bb1_2,1_2″ _builder_version=\u00a0\u00bb4.9.4″ _module_preset=\u00a0\u00bbdefault\u00a0\u00bb custom_padding=\u00a0\u00bb12px||3px|||\u00a0\u00bb][et_pb_column type=\u00a0\u00bb1_2″ _builder_version=\u00a0\u00bb4.9.4″ _module_preset=\u00a0\u00bbdefault\u00a0\u00bb][et_pb_text _builder_version=\u00a0\u00bb4.9.4″ _module_preset=\u00a0\u00bbdefault\u00a0\u00bb]<\/p>\n The opening scene took-off to a flyer start, the very first offering, Lot 30000<\/a>, an assembly of eleven postal history covers, rose from \u00a31\u2019200 to \u00a36\u2019500, and we didn\u2019t have to wait long before another item flew from \u00a31\u2019500 to \u00a37\u2019000, Lot 30007<\/a>, which was a wonderful 1858 Perkins Bacon archive proof sheet of the oval numerals A01 to A15. And if humble beginnings is a theme of the early clips then Lot 30014<\/a> deserves a mention because this 1859 envelope, the only known 1s pair on cover, went from \u00a3600 to \u00a35\u2019000 in a surprisingly rapid sequence of internet bids. Well, the famous \u2018Miss Rose Cover<\/strong>\u2019, Lot 30018<\/a>, one of the most important Cotton-reel items, which features a pair of the 2 cents black on pale rose, sold for \u00a3292\u2019800*. And the unique \u201cBurrus – Two Cents\u201d Error on Cover<\/strong>, Lot 30049<\/a>, made \u00a3414\u2019800*, and another Burrus legendary cover, the only cut square 4 cents Cotton-reel on Pelure paper<\/strong>, went for \u00a3152\u2019500* – Lot 30052<\/a>.\u00a0 Whilst on this narrative, the ex Ferrary 12 cent Cotton-reel multiple<\/strong>, known also as \u2018The Finest\u2019 and \u2018Only Sound\u2019 example, Lot 30029<\/a>, out-performed it\u2019s upper estimate, with the hammer eventually coming down at \u00a365’000 having been competitively bid up between phone and internet and from within the room. It was breath-taking. We should note here that these items all came sprinkled in stamp stardust, so to speak, them being dressed in that extra special philatelic pedigree, and a shining example of this alluring feature was Lot 30027<\/a>, one of only four covers with the rare 1850-51, 8 cents black on blue-green<\/strong>, but boasting the Provenance of; George Walcott (1935), Robert S. Emerson (1938), Henry C. Gibson (1944), Sir John Wilson (1963), and the infamous John E. du Pont (2014), going for triple its estimate making; \u00a342’000. Not to be outdone on the extraction front a piece, franked with a 1850 12c Cotton-reel, the earliest recorded use of a British Guiana stamp<\/strong>, Lot 30038<\/a>, which reached \u00a319’000*, came with the philatelic ancestry of, Philipp von Ferrary (1921), the specialist British West Indies philatelist William Augustus Townsend (1969), as well as the completist Maurice Burrus (1963), and our American Foxcatcher, John E. du Pont (2014). And a stamp which must get a mention, not least because it has been in the collection of King Farouk I, as well as Avery, Champion, and Ren\u00e9 Berlingin, sold for \u00a3109\u2019800*, Lot number 30017<\/a>, the rarest stamp of the \u201cCotton-reel\u201d primitives,<\/strong> being one of the only two single examples remaining in private hands. And for those who want to know what these stamps look like when they haven\u2019t had their corners clipped, then Lots 30119<\/a> and 30122<\/a>, are the uncut version of the reel, selling for admirable prices of, \u00a328’000 and \u00a326’000, the former ex Ferrary and the finest of this issue, the latter the rare rose-carmine<\/strong> iteration. Mind you, these look-alikes in some respects pale at the 4c blue<\/strong> Provisional<\/strong> incarnation of these, because one of the two rarest and most valuable of all unused stamps of British Guiana<\/strong>, Lot 30125<\/a>, sold for \u00a3109\u2019800* and a used example of this world rarity, the very next Lot 30126<\/a>, sold for a lofty \u00a361\u2019000*, matching its past owners for grandeur having been in the collections of Arthur Hind and Dale-Lichtenstein. This seemingly insignificant detail is quite profound given the stark contrast from when this material took to the podium in 2014 – when the bidding was all from the room.
