{"id":31688,"date":"2021-02-16T12:46:00","date_gmt":"2021-02-16T10:46:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.davidfeldman.com\/?p=31688"},"modified":"2021-02-23T15:47:22","modified_gmt":"2021-02-23T13:47:22","slug":"the-1897-red-revenue-2c-green-surcharge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.davidfeldman.com\/fr\/2021\/02\/the-1897-red-revenue-2c-green-surcharge\/","title":{"rendered":"The 1897 Red Revenue 2c Green Surcharge"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n[et_pb_section fb_built=\u00a0\u00bb1&Prime; _builder_version=\u00a0\u00bb4.6.1&Prime; _module_preset=\u00a0\u00bbdefault\u00a0\u00bb custom_padding=\u00a0\u00bb1px|||||\u00a0\u00bb][et_pb_row _builder_version=\u00a0\u00bb4.6.1&Prime; _module_preset=\u00a0\u00bbdefault\u00a0\u00bb custom_margin=\u00a0\u00bb-9px|auto||auto||\u00a0\u00bb][et_pb_column type=\u00a0\u00bb4_4&Prime; _builder_version=\u00a0\u00bb4.6.1&Prime; _module_preset=\u00a0\u00bbdefault\u00a0\u00bb][et_pb_text _builder_version=\u00a0\u00bb4.6.1&Prime; _module_preset=\u00a0\u00bbdefault\u00a0\u00bb hover_enabled=\u00a0\u00bb0&Prime; sticky_enabled=\u00a0\u00bb0&Prime;]<p><span>As if our recent revelation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.davidfeldman.com\/2020\/07\/four-treasures-of-the-chinese-republic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">re-discovery of the $2 Hall of Classics block with inverted centre<\/a> were not enough, an earlier Chinese rarity of comparable importance has also now appeared\u2026.or, more accurately, re-appeared.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The \u201cRed Revenue\u201d issues have intrigued me ever since I was lucky enough to work on the collection of Ellery Denison in 1988, in which incidentally starred a lovely example of the $2 \u201cHall\u201d invert.\u00a0 Although Ellery had one of the finest extant Revenue stamps with no overprint amongst his splendid collection, he had no green overprint, which omission offers a hint as to its extreme rarity.\u00a0 As far as I know, just seven singles exist, plus a pair which now resides in the National Postage Stamp Museum in China.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Of the seven singles privately owned, it is very fortunate that six of them are illustrated in the \u201cRocpex\u201d book of 1981, issued for the famous Exhibition of that year in Taiwan.\u00a0 But where is the missing one?\u00a0 I believe it to be the example illustrated here, \u00a0which I\u2019ve just seen. \u00a0It\u2019s extremely unlikely to be a forgery. Apart from the fact that no-one has yet successfully faked the unoverprinted stamp, given that it is effectively a miniature banknote, to forge a green surcharge (or even a \u2018small dollar\u2019), on\u00a0 a genuine stamp would be quite mad given the value (perhaps \u00a350 000) of the basic revenue stamp.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The last occasion I had the privilege of handling one of these \u201cgreen\u201d gems was in 1998, when \u201cposition 3\u201d hammered down at HK$1.5m. That example was a very fine one with a decent level of \u201cgreen-ness\u201d however this recent find seems to me to be the greenest of all, suggesting a serious lack of exposure to light over the century and more. The intensity of this colour does vary a good deal on the few extant examples. It\u2019s fortunate that the bottom right-hand Chinese character is quite distinctive.\u00a0 However this does not necessarily mean that this stamp appeared in \u201cseventh position\u201d as it would\u00a0 if the ovpt were in black: the clich\u00e9s were switched about for reasons unknown for this trial, as evidenced by the [16-17] positions of the vertical pair in the Museum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Meanwhile if any reader has any further light to shed on this item, we \u2018d be delighted to hear from them!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Tony Banwell<\/strong>, February 2021<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Tony Banwell worked with Robson Lowe from 1980 to 1992, going on to develop auctions of Chinese stamps in HK with Sotheby\u2019s until 2000.
