Luff (1860 to 1938) and our last <a href=\"https:\/\/www.davidfeldman.com\/2020\/09\/legendary-collector-14-philatelic-philistine-arthur-hind\/\">Arthur Hind<\/a>. Whilst they inhabited the same golden philatelic era and even walked the same New York streets, you could aliken their divergence in character and contribution to philately as chalk and cheese, or perhaps more appropriately light and dark. Luff is without doubt one of the brightest lights to have emerged from American philately.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=\u00a0\u00bb4.6.1&Prime; _module_preset=\u00a0\u00bbdefault\u00a0\u00bb custom_margin=\u00a0\u00bb-12px|||||\u00a0\u00bb]<\/p>\n<p>In short, if Hind was a wealthy bullish collector who\u2019s contribution to stamp collecting was his lavish purchases, then John N. Luff, an American Philatelist and author, is best described as one of the most important philatelists of his time, and who is still today recognised as one of the most distinguished philatelist of all time.<\/p>\n<p>To put context to Luff\u2019s achievements, the American Philatelic Society, to which he was a past president, named an award after him in 1940, \u2018<strong>The Luff Award<\/strong>\u2019, which is given for Meritorious Contributions to Philately by Living Philatelists. He was a founder member of The Collectors Club New York, and was also a president for several years, and he signed the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists in 1921, and became one of the first American\u2019s to do so. Luff is named in the American Philatelic Society\u2019s \u2018Hall of Fame\u2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=\u00a0\u00bb4.6.1&Prime; _module_preset=\u00a0\u00bbdefault\u00a0\u00bb custom_margin=\u00a0\u00bb-13px|||||\u00a0\u00bb]<\/p>\n<p>When reading up on the life of John N. Luff it doesn\u2019t take long to figure out that he is a legend in the world of stamps, not just in the USA. Luff was a prolific writer and contributor of articles to journals, and author of several books, including what was the go to reference book on USA philately \u201c<em>The Postage Stamps of the United States (1902)\u201d<\/em>, he also worked at the highest level for both Scotts and Stanley Gibbons in the USA. Luff was respected by the very elite collectors and dealers of the late 19th and early 20th century, and in reality <strong>Luff was an early forerunner for what we today call \u2018Expertising\u2019<\/strong>. Through his meticulous study and reference collections he established himself as the authority on all aspects of United States philately, not least the enormously complex and notoriously tricky issues of the USA Postmasters\u2019 Provisionals, which many forgeries he identified. However, his expertise and collection wasn\u2019t confined to America alone, he had extensive studies of Great Britain, Japan, China, Shanghai and Hawaii. He was an International Judge over several decades and chairman of Judges at the 1936 International Philatelic Exhibition.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=\u00a0\u00bb1_4,3_4&Prime; _builder_version=\u00a0\u00bb4.6.1&Prime; _module_preset=\u00a0\u00bbdefault\u00a0\u00bb custom_margin=\u00a0\u00bb-4px|auto||auto||\u00a0\u00bb custom_padding=\u00a0\u00bb20px||4px|||\u00a0\u00bb][et_pb_column type=\u00a0\u00bb1_4&Prime; _builder_version=\u00a0\u00bb4.6.1&Prime; _module_preset=\u00a0\u00bbdefault\u00a0\u00bb][et_pb_image src=\u00a0\u00bbhttps:\/\/www.davidfeldman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/John-N.-Luff.jpg\u00a0\u00bb title_text=\u00a0\u00bbJohn N. Under his tenure the <em>\u2018Scott Standard Postage Stamp Catalogue\u2019<\/em> became one of the world\u2019s most respected pricing references. Luff personally showed great energy, kindness and scholarship in his dealings, which laid the foundations for much of what today we accept as the very essence of professional philately.<\/p>\n<p>It is hard to find another philatelist who is so inextricably intertwined with the development and progression of American and worldwide philately, and who pathed the way for the modern day experts to grow into a highly regarded form of professional authority.<\/p>\n<p>In American publication\u2019s Luff is often referred to as \u2018<strong>The Dean of American Philatelists<\/strong>\u2019, and also \u2018The Scholar of American Philately\u2019.\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=\u00a0\u00bb4.6.1&Prime; _module_preset=\u00a0\u00bbdefault\u00a0\u00bb custom_padding=\u00a0\u00bb13px|||||\u00a0\u00bb][et_pb_column type=\u00a0\u00bb4_4&Prime; _builder_version=\u00a0\u00bb4.6.1&Prime; _module_preset=\u00a0\u00bbdefault\u00a0\u00bb][et_pb_text _builder_version=\u00a0\u00bb4.6.1&Prime; _module_preset=\u00a0\u00bbdefault\u00a0\u00bb]<\/p>\n<p>Both these titles are apt and undoubtedly merited, and maybe they are more appropriate than the one I\u2019ve chosen; \u2018The Philatelic Expert\u2019. However, in truth it&rsquo;s just semantics, because it doesn\u2019t really matter what you want to call John N Luff, his legacy is etched forever into the very fabric of the philatelic world, and as we noted at the start of this article, he could easily be described as \u2018The Light\u2019. You\u2019d certainly struggle to locate another mortal who spread the philatelic beam as wide during his time, and who was such a leading \u2018light\u2019 for those who followed in his footsteps.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Next time we meet William Beckton, before we learn about Sir Edward Denny Bacon and John Tilleard.
