In fact, so is &lsquo;derivation&rsquo;. Etymology being the account of how a particular word came about &#8211; the derivation of a word. Quite literally the birth of a word.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reason for mentioning this is that I&rsquo;ve been musing on the unusual &lsquo;origins&rsquo; of the featured 1842 1d red entire which was sent from France to England. You&rsquo;ll be aware that covers with an English franking are rare, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.davidfeldman.com\/dfsa-auctions\/2020-spring-auctions\/gb-and-british-empire-spring-2020\/30078\/1841-1d-red-1842-entire-sent-from-france-to-englan\/\">lot 30028 in the upcoming June 30th-<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.davidfeldman.com\/dfsa-auctions\/2020-spring-auctions\/gb-and-british-empire-spring-2020\/30078\/1841-1d-red-1842-entire-sent-from-france-to-englan\/\">July 2nd 2020 auction<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=\u00a0\u00bb2_3&Prime; _builder_version=\u00a0\u00bb3.27.4&Prime;][et_pb_image src=\u00a0\u00bbhttps:\/\/www.davidfeldman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/1842-Entire-SENT-FROM-FRANCE-to-England-franked-with-1841-1d-red.jpg\u00a0\u00bb _builder_version=\u00a0\u00bb3.27.4&Prime; custom_padding=\u00a0\u00bb|||0px||\u00a0\u00bb][\/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=\u00a0\u00bb3.27.4&Prime;]<\/p>\n<p><em>An unusual origin: Lot 30028, 1842 cover sent from France to England with a British 1841 1d red pl.18 just tied by Le Havre despatch cds<\/em><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=\u00a0\u00bb3.27.4&Prime;][et_pb_column type=\u00a0\u00bb4_4&Prime; _builder_version=\u00a0\u00bb3.27.4&Prime;][et_pb_text _builder_version=\u00a0\u00bb3.27.4&Prime; custom_margin=\u00a0\u00bb-16px|||||\u00a0\u00bb]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It got me thinking about the origins of our hobby &#8211; Philately.\u00a0 Not the person, or persons who started it. Because that seems to be up for debate, with various differing stories of who, when, and exactly where &#8211; although they seem to agree it couldn&rsquo;t have started before <span>May 6,\u00a0<\/span>1840.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having studied a bit of Greek many years ago, it wasn&rsquo;t a surprise to learn that Philately is in fact from the Greek \u00ab\u00a0Phil\u00a0\u00bb(o) meaning attraction or affinity, and \u00ab\u00a0ateleia\u00a0\u00bb meaning exempt from tax. Put them together and you get \u00ab\u00a0Philatelie\u00a0\u00bb. Hey-presto \u2018Philately\u2019 is born.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although before you run off and thank the Greeks for the gift of Philately, hold your Trojan horses because, like our featured cover, it is in fact France we need to pat on the back for the creation of such a distinguished word for our hobby. A French guy by the name of Georges Herpin to be exact, who became a Dad to the fledgling activity way back in 1864. And look how Philately has grown up and is now fully mature across the World.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We owe Georges a great deal of gratitude, because guess what? We could all be labelled \u00ab\u00a0Timbromanists\u00a0\u00bb! Yes, he didn&rsquo;t like it either. It apparently means \u00ab\u00a0stamp quest\u00a0\u00bb. Imagine how hard it would be to attract new collectors if this Philatelic realm we know and love was called \u00ab\u00a0Timbromanie\u00a0\u00bb?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And when you think about it, Georges was quite a clever chap. Because whilst we can appreciate why he was keen to re-brand things back in 1864, his logic also captured the essence of what the introduction of stamps had achieved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=\u00a0\u00bb1_3,2_3&Prime; _builder_version=\u00a0\u00bb3.27.4&Prime; custom_margin=\u00a0\u00bb-43px|auto||auto||\u00a0\u00bb custom_padding=\u00a0\u00bb||14px|||\u00a0\u00bb][et_pb_column type=\u00a0\u00bb1_3&Prime; _builder_version=\u00a0\u00bb3.27.4&Prime;][et_pb_text _builder_version=\u00a0\u00bb3.27.4&Prime;]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first part of Philately&rsquo;s derivation needs no explanation, however the reason he chose the second part was because the introduction of postage adhesives (stamps to us today) meant that the receipt of letters was suddenly free of charge (ingenious, as we well know), it being the case prior that postal charges were paid on recipient of a letter &#8211; ridiculous to us now but a bugbear to budding philatelists like Herpin back then. He was responsible for getting us English into the wonderful realms of Philately to &#8211; well, certainly we can trace some significant Philatelic origins from his involvement with one of the founder members of the Royal Philatelic Society London. In fact, Papa George sold his entire stamp collection to Frederick Philbrick &#8211; yes, you&rsquo;ll see his name and image up on The Distinguished wall of Philatelic fame!
