En 1862, lorsque le canal d&rsquo;eau douce reliant Le Caire \u00e0 Suez via Ismailia fut achev\u00e9, ellc mit en service des chalands-poste entre Ismailia et Zagazig (alors terminus du chemin de fer) et entre Ismailia et Suez. Entre\u00a0Port-Said et Isrnailia, la liaison \u00e9tait assur\u00e9e d&rsquo;abord en barques sur le lac Menzaleh et ensuite \u00e0 dos de chameau jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 Kantara et Ismailia, ceci jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 fin 1862. D\u00e8s le d\u00e9but de 1863, cette liaison se faisait directement par des bateaux-poste sur la \u00ab rigole de service \u00bb.<br \/>\nJusqu&rsquo;en 1867, le service \u00e9tait gratuit pour tous les employ\u00e9s de la Compagnie, ainsi que pour les commer\u00e7ants \u00e9tablis sur les diff\u00e9rents chantiers. Mais, en 1868, Gustave Riche, directeur du service de la poste, proposa de le transformer en service payant, organis\u00e9 et r\u00e9glement\u00e9 sur le mod\u00e8le du service postal fran\u00e7ais. On cr\u00e9a dans ce but quatre timbres aux valeurs suivantes: 1 c., 5c., 20c. et 40c., qui furent imprim\u00e9s par la Maison Ch\u00e9zaud A\u00een\u00e9 et Tavernier, \u00e0 Paris, et dont la livraison fut effectu\u00e9e en Egypte aux environs du 8 juillet 1868. (La premi\u00e8re date connue sur lettre est le 14 juillet.)<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-1909\" href=\"https:\/\/www.davidfeldman.com\/fr\/2011\/05\/lettres-de-la-compagnie-du-canal-de-suez\/the-suez-canal-between-kantara-and-el-ferdane-1024x765\/\"><\/a><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-1909\" href=\"https:\/\/www.davidfeldman.com\/fr\/2011\/05\/lettres-de-la-compagnie-du-canal-de-suez\/the-suez-canal-between-kantara-and-el-ferdane-1024x765\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1909\" title=\"The-Suez-Canal-Between-Kantara-and-El-Ferdane-1024x765\" src=\"https:\/\/www.davidfeldman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/The-Suez-Canal-Between-Kantara-and-El-Ferdane-1024x765-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.davidfeldman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/The-Suez-Canal-Between-Kantara-and-El-Ferdane-1024x765-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.davidfeldman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/The-Suez-Canal-Between-Kantara-and-El-Ferdane-1024x765.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Pour oblit\u00e9rer ces timbres, des cachets \u00e0 date mobile furent command\u00e9s \u00e0 Paris, pour les 12 Bureaux suivants: Port-Said, Raz-EI-Ech, Kil. 34, Kantara, El Guisr, Chancier VI, Ismailia sur le canal maritime, et Serapeum, Kil. 42, Chalouf, Kil. 83 et Suez sur le canal d&rsquo;eau douce. Cette commande fut embarqu\u00e9e \u00e0 Marseille le 28 juillet, mais en attendant sa r\u00e9ception, on annula les timbres-poste sp\u00e9ciaux avec des cachets de fortune: \u00e0 Port-Said, on utilisa le cachet du Bureau francais: grand chiffre 5129 dans un losange de points, \u00e0 Kantara on oblit\u00e9ra \u00e0 la plume, \u00e0 Ismailia on employa un rectangle de points allong\u00e9s, en bleu, et \u00e0 Suez un cercle incomplet forme de gros points losangiques, frappe \u00e9galement en bleu.<br \/>\nEn fait, les cachets sp\u00e9ciaux arriv\u00e8rent trop tard pour \u00eatre utilis\u00e9s sur les timbres de la Compagnie, car, le 7 ao\u00fbt 1868, un accord avait \u00e9t\u00e9 sign\u00e9 avec le directeur g\u00e9n\u00e9ral des Postes \u00e9gyptiennes, Muzzi Bey, par lequel la Compagnie du canal c\u00e9dait \u00e0 la Poste \u00e9gyptienne le service de la poste dans I&rsquo;isthme \u00e0 partir du 16 ao\u00fbt, ainsi que tous ses bureaux postaux et son mat\u00e9riel, y compris quatre cachets sp\u00e9ciaux, qu&rsquo;on ne trouve donc que sur des timbres \u00e9gyptiens (encore ne connait-on gu\u00e8re sur lettres que Chantier VI (2 pi\u00e8ces connues \u00e0 ce jour). Sur d\u00e9tach\u00e9s, on trouve les trois autres: Raz-El-Ech, Kil. 42 et Kil. 83).<br \/>\nLes timbres-poste de la Compagnie du canal de Suez cess\u00e8rent donc d&rsquo;avoir cours le 16 ao\u00fbt 1868. Ils n&rsquo;avaient donc dur\u00e9 qu&rsquo;\u00e0 peine cinq semaines, c&rsquo;est ce qui explique la raret\u00e9 des lettres sur lesquelles on les rencontre: on en connait 21 \u00e0 ce jour. Elles ont donc toutes pass\u00e9 par bateau, non sur le canal de Suez proprement dit, qui n&rsquo;\u00e9tait pas termin\u00e9, mais sur la \u00ab rigole de service\u00a0\u00bb et le canal d&rsquo;eau douce. C&rsquo;est ce qui explique le titre de cet article: Lettres de la Compagnie du canal de Suez, et non Canal de Suez.<\/p>\n<p>E. Antonini &amp; Dr. J.
