{"id":14053,"date":"2015-06-11T08:36:18","date_gmt":"2015-06-11T06:36:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.davidfeldman.com\/?p=14053"},"modified":"2015-06-16T10:42:48","modified_gmt":"2015-06-16T08:42:48","slug":"the-primitives-usa-postmaster-provisionals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.davidfeldman.com\/fr\/2015\/06\/the-primitives-usa-postmaster-provisionals\/","title":{"rendered":"The \u201cPrimitives\u201c: USA Postmaster Provisionals"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"p1\">The Unique \u201cBlue Boy\u201d<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Alexandria, VA Provisional Issue<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Postmaster Daniel Bryan<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">Sometime around 1846 (date of the earliest known use of the Alexandrias), postmaster Daniel Bryan (who held that office from 1821 to 1853) was responsible for a typeset issue of 5 cent adhesives in two types, and printed on buff and on blue papers. Of the buff papers, two covers are known with Type I and three with Type II. The only blue paper stamp, the famous \u201cBlue Boy\u201d cover, bears Type I. In addition, there is one Type I on Buff off cover (and one of the Type IIs was separated from its cover).<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.davidfeldman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Pasted-Graphic-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-thumbnail wp-image-14347 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.davidfeldman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Pasted-Graphic-3-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Blue Boy\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">The first Alexandria stamp was found by John K. Tiffany in his family correspondence, in 1872. The others were found as late as 1933. Many of the ones on cover are uncancelled; two show manuscript \u201cN\u00b0 45\u201d or \u201cN\u00b0 70\u201d below the denomination.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\">The latest known use of the Alexandria Provisionals is that of the \u201cBlue Boy\u201d cover, with its original contents dated November 24, 1847 \u2212 well after the first Federal Issue had appeared.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p9\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.davidfeldman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/blue-boy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-14349 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.davidfeldman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/blue-boy-300x176.jpg\" alt=\"blue boy\" width=\"300\" height=\"176\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.davidfeldman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/blue-boy-300x176.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.davidfeldman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/blue-boy-1024x600.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.davidfeldman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/blue-boy.jpg 1554w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p11\">November 25 (1847) datestamp and \u201cPAID\u201d handstamps.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p13\"><b>Discovery And Sale <\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p14\">Late in 1907, Mary Fawcett (daughter of Jannett and Wallace Hooff) was sorting through some old letters stored in her sewing box. According to one report, she wondered if there was any value to the old stamps she saw on them. After several inquiries as to its possible value, who consigned it to Percival Parrish of the Philadelphia Stamp Company, who had a strong potential buyer. On December 20th, 1907, a letter from Parrish stated \u00ab\u00a0yesterday I sold to Mr. George H. Worthington of Cleveland, Ohio, the Alexandria stamp for $3000.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p class=\"p14\">When Worthington&rsquo;s collection was sold to pay his debts, the \u201cBlue Boy\u201d was not included. Together with other choice items, it was handled by dealer Warren Colson. who sold it to Henry Gibson. Later owners included Alfred Caspary, B.D. Phillips, Josiah Lilly and John Boker, Jr. The cover is signed by Alberto Diena and David Feldman. Illustrated by John Luff in his pioneer handbook on the Provisionals, also by Linn\u2019s \u201cPhilatelic Gems,\u201d the Williams Brothers \u201cEncyclopedia..\u201d (who gave the date as 1846, in error), the Anphilex 1971 and the Washington 2006 catalogues. From the time in 1981 when this cover was sold by Private Treaty by David Feldman to its present owner, for approximately one million dollars, it has remained the benchmark for a cover of USA philately, not even exceeded by the recent rediscovery and sale of the unique 1869 90c cover, or the earliest known use of the 1847 First Issue 10c Washington.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p13\"><b>The Original Contents: \u201cBurn as usual\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p14\">It came at the end of the letter, a simple instruction from one lover to another in 1847. Fortunately, this love letter and its famous cover were saved, because the cover bears the only known example of the Alexandria, Virginia, postmaster provisional stamp printed on blue paper.
